Matthew Barney: No Restraint

Directed by: Alison Chernick

Now Playing: NYC at the IFC Center or available on IFC On Demand

If you have ever looked at the work of Matthew Barney and walked away scratching your head you may be missing some of today’s most profound art. Although he may be the darling of the art world, much of the public will never come to understand exactly what Matthew Barney is trying to say. Alison Chernick’s movie Matthew Barney: No Restraint could be the key to making sense of the mind and method of this incredible artist. The documentary covers the production of Drawing Restraint 9, Barney’s latest film as well as the progression of his art over the years. Chernick shows us a rarely seen side of Barney, but still much is left to be explained. I doubt anyone could truly break the surface of his larger than life character, but we do catch small glimpses of man simply making sense of the world around him.
